Heathers in the Laundry Room

there were two Heathers in the laundry room in my building around dinnertime tonight

5’2”, deeply tanned
  rippled dark brown hair halfway down their backs
  with requisite blond highlights
  and big bright-toothed smiles

they were comparing nail polish
  just like they were doing in grade 9

a rainbow assortment of thongs lay atop a drier
  the only free one
  the one I needed

oh, how to be blasé
  how to just ignore their lure

easy, since the Heathers were adrift
  in their Robson Street universe
  unaware
  that a poet was in their midst
  immortalizing their shallowness
  for non-Heathers to embrace
  and nod
  and smile
